Lake Como Day Trip from Milan: Where Should You Leave Your Luggage?

For a Lake Como day trip that starts and ends in Milan, leaving your suitcase in Milan usually avoids carrying it on trains and boats. Choose luggage storage in Como when your itinerary brings you back to Como to collect it. If you return to Milan through Varenna, plan your storage around that different return route.

A day at Lake Como can include a waterfront walk, lunch in Bellagio, a visit to Varenna or time exploring Como itself. Before choosing your first train, decide where your luggage needs to be when the day ends.

That decision matters particularly after hotel check-out, between accommodation bookings or before an evening onward journey.

This guide explains how to choose between luggage storage in Milan and Como, which railway stations serve different lake itineraries, and what to check before boarding a boat with a suitcase.

Transport information checked on 15 October 2026. Check the operators’ current timetables and notices for your travel date.

Should you leave your luggage in Milan or Como?

Choose a storage location that you can collect from naturally on your return journey.

The key question is:

“Where will I be when I need my suitcase again?”

A locker close to your arrival point may be inconvenient if you leave the lake from somewhere else.

When luggage storage in Milan makes sense

Leaving your main luggage in Milan is a practical option when you are visiting the lake for the day and returning to the city afterwards.

You can travel with a small day bag, move between trains and boats with fewer items, and collect your suitcase before your next journey.

Departing from Milano Centrale

Lock & Go’s luggage storage near Milano Centrale is at Via Tonale 5, Milan.

The facility is outside the railway station. Include time to reach it, store your bags and return to your departure platform.

This location can suit a day trip that starts and ends at Milano Centrale, whether you choose Como San Giovanni or Varenna-Esino as your lake destination.

Staying near the Duomo

If your accommodation and evening plans are in central Milan, the Lock & Go Duomo District location, at Via Santa Maria Valle 1, may fit your day better.

Compare the complete route from your accommodation to storage, then to your departure station, and back again.

Our guide to choosing between Duomo and Milano Centrale luggage storage explains that decision in more detail.

Departing from Milano Cadorna

Milano Cadorna is a different departure station from Milano Centrale.

If you are travelling from Cadorna, check whether a storage stop near Centrale would add an unnecessary journey across Milan. Choose the location that fits your actual departure and return plans.

When luggage storage in Como makes sense

Storage in Como is useful when you already have your suitcase with you and will return to the city before continuing your journey.

Examples include:

Lock & Go Como luggage storage is at Viale Felice Cavallotti 2A, Como.

Use the street address when planning your route between the station, locker and departure pier. Allow time for each part of the journey.

A straightforward plan is:

  1. Arrive in Como.
  2. Store your suitcase.
  3. Explore the city or take your planned boat trip.
  4. Return to Como.
  5. Collect your luggage before your next journey.

Como is one city on Lake Como. Storage in Como is not storage in Bellagio or Varenna. Make sure the collection point fits the places you will actually visit.

Which train should you take from Milan to Lake Como?

There is no single railway station called “Lake Como” that serves every lakeside itinerary.

Three useful routes are:

Departure stationArrival stationIndicative direct journeyUseful starting point for
Milano CentraleComo San GiovanniAround 40 minutesComo city and onward boat trips
Milano CadornaComo LagoAround 60 minutesComo’s lakefront area
Milano CentraleVarenna-EsinoAround 65 minutesVarenna and boat connections towards Bellagio

These are approximate journey times published by Trenord. Use the timetable for your selected service to check the actual departure, arrival and any changes.

Official route information:

Como San Giovanni and Como Lago are different stations

Check the full station name when booking and when planning your return.

If you arrive at Como San Giovanni but depart from Como Lago, account for the journey between your final activity, luggage storage and the correct station.

Varenna is a separate route choice

For a day centred on Varenna and Bellagio, compare the direct train to Varenna-Esino with travelling through Como.

Do this before booking storage in Como. A route through Varenna may not bring you to Como at all.

Can you take luggage on Lake Como ferries?

Yes, subject to the operator’s baggage rules and the type of vessel.

Navigazione Laghi’s baggage tariff, effective from 1 April 2026, makes these distinctions:

SituationPublished baggage rule
One free bag per passengerLongest side no more than 60 cm, volume no more than 40 litres and weight no more than 20 kg
Ordinary boats and ferriesStandard per-item limits include an 80 cm longest side and 40-litre volume; total baggage weight is limited to 60 kg per passenger
Fast hydrofoils and catamaransBags with a longest side over 60 cm are not permitted
Additional or oversized baggageCharges or special acceptance conditions may apply

Paying a baggage supplement does not override the size restriction on fast services.

For a large suitcase, check the official baggage conditions before buying your boat ticket.

Can you use NaviTap when travelling with a suitcase?

The operator’s current FAQ says NaviTap cannot be used when travelling with suitcases, or on fast services.

If you plan to bring a suitcase aboard, arrange the appropriate ticket through the operator instead of relying on contactless tap-and-go travel.

Check the Navigazione Laghi FAQ for current ticketing conditions.

Three practical Lake Como day-trip plans

These are route suggestions, not fixed schedules. Check that the trains and boats connect on your chosen date before booking.

Option 1: Milan to Como and back

Suggested route: Milan → Como → Milan.

Choose this if you want to spend most of the day exploring Como, with the option of a boat trip that returns to the city.

If your suitcase is already in Milan, leaving it there avoids taking it to the lake. If you arrive in Como with luggage, storage in Como can work because your itinerary returns to the same collection point.

Plan one main activity, leave room for lunch and a waterfront walk, then collect your bags before departure.

Option 2: Milan to Varenna and Bellagio

Suggested route: Milano Centrale → Varenna-Esino → Bellagio → Varenna-Esino → Milano Centrale.

Consider this route if Varenna and Bellagio are your priorities.

Storage in Milan can fit naturally because you return there at the end of the day. Check both boat crossings before committing to an evening train.

Leave enough time between arriving at the Varenna pier and reaching the railway station. A boat arrival time is not the time you will be standing on the train platform.

Option 3: Como, Bellagio and Varenna in one loop

Suggested route: Milan → Como → Bellagio → Varenna → Milan.

This route can offer variety, but it requires more coordination. Confirm each connection and allow enough time to enjoy the places between them.

For this itinerary, leaving luggage in Milan usually fits better than leaving it in Como.

If your suitcase is in Como, you would need to return there to collect it. That changes the route and may remove the advantage of travelling back from Varenna.

How much can you realistically fit into one day?

Build your itinerary around one or two priorities.

For example:

Adding more destinations also adds boarding, waiting and transfer time.

If a villa is your priority, check its own opening dates, ticket requirements and arrival instructions before choosing your transport. Our introduction to Lake Como’s historic villas can help you decide what interests you.

A route with fewer stops also leaves more flexibility if lunch takes longer, a queue develops or you decide to stay somewhere you enjoy.

Check the return journey before leaving Milan

Use the official Lake Como boat timetable for your travel date. Services vary by season and day, and poor weather can affect operations.

Before departure, identify:

  1. Your intended return boat.
  2. A workable alternative connection.
  3. Your return railway station.
  4. The luggage collection point.
  5. Any onward train or airport transfer.

If you have an evening flight or a reserved long-distance train, work backwards from that departure and include time for luggage collection.

A locker being open 24/7 does not mean trains and boats operate throughout the night.

What sizes are Lock & Go luggage lockers?

Lock & Go offers three locker sizes:

LockerOfficial dimensions in centimetresDimensions in inchesPublished starting rate
Mini35×35×45 cm14×14×18 inFrom €1.49 per hour
Standard48×45×85 cm19×18×33 inFrom €2.49 per hour
Maxi48×61×85 cm19×24×33 inFrom €3.49 per hour

Measure your luggage including wheels, handles and external pockets. For a close fit, use the centimetre measurements because the inch figures are rounded.

If you want to store several bags together, check their combined arrangement. Capacity depends on their actual shapes and dimensions.

Starting hourly rates are not a quotation for your whole day. Select the location, size and storage duration to see the total booking price.

Are Lock & Go lockers open 24/7?

Yes. Lock & Go is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays.

This can help when leaving early for the lake or returning to collect luggage later in the evening.

Keep your booking confirmation and access instructions available, and make sure your booked storage period covers your planned collection time.

Can you pay cash at Lock & Go?

No. Lock & Go does not accept cash. Payment is electronic.

Use one of the payment methods offered during booking or the on-site payment process.

These are Lock & Go’s payment conditions. Transport operators have their own ticketing and payment rules.

What should you carry for the day?

Before closing your locker, take the things you will need while away from your suitcase:

Keep the day bag manageable, particularly if your itinerary includes several changes of transport.

Also check individual attraction rules if you are visiting a villa, museum or another ticketed site.

What if you are travelling after hotel check-out?

Ask your accommodation whether it can hold your luggage and when you would need to collect it.

Hotel storage may fit well if you will return to the same neighbourhood. A separate locker can be more convenient when your final stop is near a station or elsewhere in the city.

Compare the whole journey, including the return trip to retrieve your bags.

What if you are visiting Como by car?

Plan parking, luggage storage and your return route together.

If you park in Como and return to the same car park after sightseeing, a storage stop in Como can fit that plan. If you continue driving to another town, consider where you will need your bags next.

Check the selected car park’s access hours and conditions independently from the locker’s opening hours.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I leave my suitcase for a Lake Como day trip from Milan?

If you return to Milan, consider leaving it in Milan before departure. Choose Como storage when your route brings you back to Como to collect it.

Can I store luggage in Como while visiting Bellagio?

Yes. You can leave luggage in Como and visit Bellagio, provided your itinerary includes returning to Como for collection. Check the return connection before leaving.

Should I store luggage in Como if I return to Milan from Varenna?

Usually, storage in Milan is a better fit for that route. Leaving bags in Como would require an additional journey back to collect them.

Is Como Lago the same station as Como San Giovanni?

No. They are separate stations. Check the complete station name on your itinerary and account for travel between your activities, storage and departure station.

How can I reach Bellagio from Milan?

Two routes to compare are travelling by train to Varenna-Esino and continuing by boat, or travelling to Como and taking a boat from there. Choose using the connections available on your travel date.

Can I collect my luggage late in the evening?

Yes. Lock & Go is open 24/7. Follow your access instructions and ensure your booking covers the storage period you need.

Can I leave luggage overnight?

Lock & Go provides 24/7 access. Select a storage period that covers the overnight stay and check the total price before booking.

Does a large suitcase automatically require a Maxi locker?

Choose by dimensions rather than the suitcase’s marketing label. Compare its full measurements with the official locker dimensions, including wheels and handles.

Can I leave luggage at one location and collect it at another?

Plan to collect your luggage from the same facility where you stored it. A locker booking should not be treated as luggage forwarding between Milan and Como.

Do I need to visit Como city to see Lake Como?

No. Como is one starting point. Varenna is another option accessible by train from Milan, with boat connections for exploring the central lake.

Book storage around your return route

Choose your lake itinerary first, then choose where your suitcase will wait.

With your collection point planned, you can spend the day enjoying the lake without carrying luggage you will only need afterwards.
